Concert II: From Our Earth
We open with Mark O’Connor’s F.C.’s Jig, a delightful arrangement for violin and viola of a theme from O’Connor’s Violin Concerto. We welcome you to get out of your seats and dance!
Bohuslav Martinů was a visionary of music composition and a violin prodigy. His vast catalogue of compositions include chamber, orchestral and choral works, concertos and symphonies. After he wrote the patriotic work ‘The Field Mass’ for the Czech army in France he was blacklisted by the Nazis and his apartment was broken into by the Gestapo. Having managed to escape to the US, Martinů suffered a near fatal fall while teaching at the Tanglewood Music Festival in the summer of 1947. The first work he wrote during this time of recuperation was the Three Madrigals for Violin and Viola, H. 313, likely inspired by the English madrigals that he had fallen in…
